Dear Parents,
I hope you had a good weekend! Here are the updates for this week:
1.) Due Thursday: Black t-shirts with $5 and the field trip form with $15. I am missing quite a few of those items.
2.) Valentine's Day- Please make sure that your child brings a bag for their Valentines. If your child is bringing Valentines, please make sure they have enough for everyone (there are currently 13 kids in the class). Don't forget to bring in the items you signed up for on the party sheet :) I will bring in additional food items since I had planned for 12, but got an extra student this week.
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080e4cadac2aa4f94-valentines
Also, Student Council is sponsoring a special Valentine’s Day dress. For a donation of one dollar, students are welcome to come to school dressed in red and/or pink on Valentine’s Day. Appropriate school clothing and shoes only.
3.) The spelling test will be on Thursday this week.
4.) There is no school Friday or Monday.
5.) Last, if you did not attend the Town Hall Meeting last week, one of the important items discussed is our school's reputation. We currently are one of the top schools in the valley and have a 5 star rating on several sites. Our school needs to hit at least 160 students in order to break even. The best way to keep our school at the top is by telling everyone how great it is. If you have a minute, please go online and write a review (Yelp, Facebook, Great Schools...). We would really appreciate it.
Have a great week!

Here are a few things we will be working on this week:
Reading: We are starting our new nonfiction unit. Razkids has nonfiction books that they can read for their 20 minutes each night. They can switch between fiction and nonfiction, as I would prefer they read both :)
Writing: We are finishing up our writing unit on small moments. After the break, the students will begin writing informational pieces, which ties in nicely with our nonfiction reading unit.
Science: We are finishing up our unit on matter and will begin learning about Processes that Shape the Earth when we return from break.
Math: We are starting Module 4, which is addition and subtraction within 200 with word problems to 100.
Lots of new ideas going on in second grade :)
Important Dates:
11/16- Thanksgiving Feast at 11:00
11/17-11/25- Thanksgiving Break
12/20- Minimum Day

Here are a few things that we worked on last week:
Reading: We learned how readers don't just notice craft moves from their favorite authors, but they actually try them out. They also looked at how authors have intentions and how readers think about how the whole book clicks together, noticing masterful writing.
Writing: We have continued to study our favorite books to see how writers make their books so powerful. We looked a what they did and how they did it. I even used a featured author from our very own class to study how they made their story so beautiful. They were then challenged to go off and try it out on their own stories.
Math: We learned how to compare three digit numbers and write them in order from least to greatest. The students will have their Module 3 test on Thursday.
Science: We learned how we can use materials to build other things, like structures. They looked at the different properties of building materials to determine if they could build a given structure. I also introduced them to reversible and irreversible change, which we will be diving deeper into this week.
Please remember that the Veteran's Day assembly is this Wednesday at 8:30 in the MPR. Second grade will be reciting a short poem :)
We are having a school wide Thanksgiving Feast this year. Here is the link to sign up if you would like to help donate to our feast:

Important Dates:
October 31: Safari Park Field Trip- Please see email for info
November 2: Minimum Day
November 7: Veteran's Day Assembly at 8:30
November 12: Veteran's Day is observed-no school
November 16: Minimum Day and Thanksgiving Feast
November 19-23: Thanksgiving break
What we were up to last week:
Reading: We learned to read like writers last week. We looked at how some of our favorite authors used craft moves to help make their writing masterful.
Writing: They used what they learned in reading to help them make their writing even more powerful. They practiced using some of the craft moves from their favorite authors.
Math: We are almost finished with Module 3. We will have our test next week.
Science: In STEAM last week, we started the process of allowing the students to think about experiments they want to try. We started with a picture of a skyscraper in London that melted a car. The kids created their own science notebooks and got to work, thinking about what they noticed about the picture, questions they have, and what the picture reminds them of. Then, they came up with ways we could test heat reflection. This week, we will put their ideas to the test.
Social Studies: We will begin a new unit this week on map skills.
Have a great week! It's going to be a fun one!

Dear Parents,
Thank you for all of your support at the Fall Festival! It was a huge success and I hope you all enjoyed it! Here are a few things we did last week :)
Reading: The students worked hard on learning how to fix their mistakes while they are reading. Some of the kids are reading so fast that they are forgetting to do the important work of asking themselves "does that make sense?". They learned that good readers stop when it doesn't make sense, don't give up, use a different strategy, make it make sense, and then reread.
Writing- Last week we really focused on editing. Each student was provided with a checklist of what good second grade writers should be doing. When they feel like they are done, they reread their story and check to see if they did everything on the checklist. I have also used it for setting goals. I am pushing them to be reflective and to decide how they can make their writing better, rather than just telling them suggestions. I am really proud of how far they have come in just a few short months!
Math- We finished up the first half of the module and took the mid-module assessment. All of the students did really well! Please check their binders for their tests, which are being sent home today.
STEAM- This week in STEAM, Mr. Hughes taught the students about potential and kinetic energy. They also learned how the potential energy is transferred to kinetic energy. They built a catapult with their group and practiced using the terms to teach each other about potential and kinetic energy. They had a great time!
Thanks again for all you do! I can't wait for our field trip next week!

Dear Parents,
Here are a few things we did last week :)
In reading, we looked at ways to solve tricky words by using clues in the story. We also learned that some words are easy to read, but can be hard to understand. Good readers work hard to understand the meanings of these tricky words. One way is to replace the troublesome word with another word that would make sense in the story. You can have them try this at home :)
In writing, students learned how to read their stories like detectives, making sure they are using correct punctuation, capitalization, and details that make sense to their readers. They learned about run-on sentences and how it can affect the power of their story. They are also learning how to revise and edit their stories in order to be prepared for publishing.
In math, we are approaching the mid-module assessment (Wednesday). The students have been working hard on learning place value and all the different ways that numbers can be written. They are doing really well so far!
In STEAM last week, the students were read a story about a book work who got trapped in a book with all types of towers. Their challenge was to build a free standing tower, with a strong base and ceiling, that could support the worm. They had such a fun time with this challenge!
Such a busy and fun week! See you all at conferences on Friday!

Dear Parents,
Here are a few highlights from last week :)
In reading, the students learned how to look for common beginnings and endings in order to help them tackle difficult words. As they become better readers, they will be diving into longer books, many without pictures. They are learning how to use other tools to help them decode. They have also continued to work on stopping and jotting down their thoughts, questions, and predictions on post-its as they read. Please encourage this as home, as many students are speeding through their books without taking time to stop and think about what and why things are happening in their stories.
In writing, we discussed that good writers write seed stories, not watermelon stories. Now that they are getting better at making sure their story has a beginning, middle, and end, with dialogue, details, and punctuation, I want them to really focus on choosing one small moment in their life and really zooming in on that moment, describing in full detail that one event (rather than telling me a bunch of things they did on vacation, with very little meaning or feeling).
In science, we started looking at how properties determine the use of a material. The students worked in pairs to design either a playground, a house, or an animal shield. They had to decide what materials would be best to build their structure or animal and why these materials were used, specifically looking at the different properties that each material has.
In math, we started our new unit on counting by ones, tens, and hundreds. They are learning that they can skip count in different ways to get to a larger number more efficiently than just counting by ones. It was a very busy week!
Please remember that conferences are the 19th. There is no school that day, but daycare is available, if needed, during your conference time. Have a fabulous week!

Dear Parents,
Last week we continued to dive deeper into our reading by learning how good readers roll up their sleeves to tackle new words. We discussed different strategies to use when you come to a word that is unfamiliar. In writing, we continued to work on adding meaningful details to our stories and used mentor texts to help us with that. In math, we finished up Module 2. The students did so much better on this test! I am so proud of their hard work. The tests are coming home in their binders, so be on the lookout for those. In science we learned how to test the strength of different materials and what properties they must have in order to be strong. We ended the week with a fun field trip to the Fleet Science Center, where the students gained additional information on matter. They loved the demonstration with dry ice and we learned that this type of matter can change from a solid to a gas, skipping the liquid phase. Please make sure to check out the pictures that I shared with you.
Remember that Friday is a minimum day and free dress.
Parent conferences are October 19th. Please fill out the paper that went home in the Owl Post so that I can schedule you in. There is no school this day, but daycare is available if needed.
Also, we are in the process of scheduling a Safari Park field trip with 1st grade for October 31st (Halloween). Keep an eye out for the permission slip (coming soon). Have a great week!

It's been another fun week in second grade! In reading, the students have been working hard on retelling important events in their books as well as stopping and jotting down their thoughts while they are reading. It is really important at this age for the kids to really be thinking deeper about what is going on with the characters in their books, as well as making connections and thinking about the lessons that can be learned. In writing, we have been learning different strategies that good writers use to stretch out small moments. Apparently a few of the students have enjoyed writing so much that they have asked for journals at home in order to practice. One way to support your child with writing is to have them talk about events that have occurred in their lives, as we are currently working on personal narratives. In math, we are at the end of module 2, which means we will have another math test on Thursday. I will send home a review to complete on Wednesday night. We started social studies this week, discussing ways in which our lives today are different from our parents and grandparents. They have enjoyed comparing different items from the past to what they look like today. Lastly, the students used what they have learned in our class about absorbency to help build a barrier around their "house" to protect it from a flood in this week's STEAM challenge. Although they were not fully successful, it led to a great discussion on how they could have better protected their house. We are all very excited for our field trip on Friday! Have a great weekend!

Dear Parents,
We had an amazing week in second grade. We continued to learn about what good readers do. They have learned how to take a sneak peek, choose a voice, look for snap words, and stop-think-retell. Their reading stamina has increased greatly since the beginning of the year and they seem to really enjoy doing the work of big kids. In writing, they have continued to work on personal narratives, with the goal of getting towards publishing their first piece. We have discussed how to write catchy leads, add juicy details, and end their story in a way that brings everything together. In math, we started our unit on measurement. They worked on measuring in centimeters and meters. The math test for the first module was a bit rough. Please know that even though we have moved on to measurement, we continue to work on strategies learned in module 1 during our word problem time. STEAM was probably one of the most exciting times for them last week. They worked with 3rd graders to build a solar oven to cook nachos. Although it was not as hot in the morning, they definitely were able to get the cheese to melt slightly. It was a big success!
Here are some important dates that are coming up:
9/20- Back to School Night at 6:00. Parents only. Daycare is NOT available.
9/28- Field Trip to Reuben H. Fleet Science Center
10/20- Fall Festival 4:00-8:00
Have a great week!

Last week was a busy week. In writing, we worked on learning how to write catchy beginnings in order to hook our readers. They did such a great job at this! We are now working on how to use our 5 senses to make our writing come alive. Today, they brainstormed ideas for sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. They will then learn how to take those words and place them in their writing, painting a picture of the event for the reader. In math, we finished up our module for addition and subtraction and will have our test tomorrow. In science, they learned that every type of matter can be described by their properties. They worked with a partner to describe objects based on their properties (color, texture, flexibility, etc). They have also been working hard at practicing for their assembly (September 12th at 2:00 in the MPR). Additionally, we participated in part 1 of a 2 part STEAM challenge with 3rd grade. They tested out different materials in order to see which materials melted an ice cube faster. They will then use this knowledge to build a solar oven that will cook nachos. They are so excited about this! Here's to another fun week in second grade!

The second week of school was such a great week! We have now started our reading and writing curriculum, as well as our math and science units.
In reading, the students worked on learning how to take a second grade sneak peek into their books to determine what type of voice to use while they are reading. Now that they have become readers, the second grade curriculum really focuses on teaching them how to become better readers by choosing their voice, asking questions about their reading, making predictions and connections, etc. The kids had a lot of fun last week trying out different ways to read their books. I encourage you to have them focus on this at home during their 20 minutes of reading.
In writing, we started looking at different authors to use as mentors when deciding how to write a story. We looked at how the authors used words to describe what it felt like, looked like, and sounded like. We will continue this week with using our 5 senses to help us write more descriptive stories.
For science, we began our unit on Properties of Matter. The students learned about the 3 types of matter and went on a scavenger hunt to see where we could find these different types. They also did a scoot activity, which I think was a hit! They had to dance around the room looking for different questions that I had posted up about solids, liquids, and gases. With a partner, they had to record their answers. Think of it like musical chairs without the chairs :) We will be showing off our learning at the assembly on September 12th at 2:00, so mark your calendars.
I hope your child is enjoying second grade, as I know I am. They are such a fun group of kids!

We have survived our first week of second grade! We had a lot of fun getting to know each other and learning the rules and routines of the classroom. In reading, the students have been working on building their stamina in order to read for longer periods of time. In writing, they are working on a piece about something they did over summer. We discussed the importance of adding details and checking for the 5 w's. This was simply a way for me to preassess them as writers before I start teaching the curriculum next week. In math, they got to play all kinds of fun math games and practice how math rotation should look like and sound like. Now that we have established rules and routines, I will begin with the curriculum next week. Your child will have reading and math homework every night. I will start spelling homework in a few weeks. Students who fail to complete their homework will be given one warning. After that warning, they will need to sit out at recess to complete it. Please remember that when they start bringing home their math books, they must bring them back the next day, otherwise they will not be able to do the classwork. They will also need to have their reading log signed every night. Please let me know if you have any questions. It was a great start this week! We are going to have a lot of fun together!

They will also need to have their reading log signed every night. Please let me know if you have any questions. It was a great start this week! We are going to have a lot of fun together!
